Junk Bond Finance

Junk bond finance is a phrase that gained currency in the 1980s, referring to the issuance of high yield bonds to supply funding for small, unseasoned companies or to raise the capital to support corporate takeover bids, including leveraged buyouts.

Layaway

Layaway plans are an old means for helping consumers finance purchases. As opposed to credit sales, layaway requires the consumer to pay in full before taking possession of the goods.

Layering

Layering is a market manipulation technique that is related to spoofing.

Living Wills

In everyday usage, living wills are advance medical directives given by individuals in anticipation of contingency during which they may severly ill or injured and unable to speak for themselves. Now the phrase has begun to be used by regulators with respect to financial institutions.

Margin Loans

MBS

A mortgage backed security, or MBS, is a debt instrument backed by home mortgages.

Microfinance

Microfinance is the lending of small amounts at low interest interest rates to spur the development of small businesses in poor countries.

Mobile Banking

Nudging is a psychological term. It refers to the attempt to influence behavior by carefully selecting the choices that are presented to people.

Patent trolls are individuals or institutions that invest in patents for the stream of royalty income that they can provide. The trading of patents is becoming an increasingly important as an alternative investment.
