Definition:
A buy side analyst performs research on behalf of money managers (investment managers), to guide their investment decisions. These analysts typically are advising money managers on what securities to buy for their portfolios, hence the phrase. Buy side analysis also may be used by securities traders.
Contrast with sell side analyst. The reports and opinions that buy side analysts prepare are not generally released for public consumption. Buy side analysts normally face far fewer conflicts of interest, thus giving them greater freedom to render independent opinions.
Alternate Spellings: Buy-Side Analyst
Examples:
She took a job as a buy side analyst with a leading mutual fund company.
