T. Rowe Price

By Mark Kolakowski, About.com

T. Rowe Price Overview: T. Rowe Price Group, Inc. is a publicly-traded corporation headquartered in Baltimore. Its main lines of business include:

  • Mutual Funds
  • Discount Brokerage
  • Retirement Services
  • Advisory Planning (Financial Planning)

Size: T. Rowe Price reported these figures as of June, 2008:

  • Employees = 5,308
  • Mutual Funds = 78
  • Mutual Fund Assets Under Management = $388 billion
  • Investor Centers (U.S.) = 14
  • Offices in 12 Countries
  • Office Locations (U.S.) = 6

Positives: T. Rowe Price is an industry leader. Employment has been growing recently. The firm proudly cites low employee turnover and long tenures among its senior professionals. Meanwhile, T. Rowe Price looks to hire seasoned financial professionals from other firms. For just one high-profile example, company president Edward Bernard had a long career at Merrill Lynch (and not in mutual funds, it should be noted) before joining T. Rowe Price.

Negatives: While the small size of T. Rowe Price theoretically offers above-average chances for exposure to senior management, it also theoretically limits the opportunities for advancement. The problem can be exacerbated by the long tenures and low turnover that T. Rowe Price cites.
